The Newest Trend in Adult Dance Learning!

Our Intro to Dance Workshops are intensive educational experiences designed for the busy, the motivated and those new to dance.  Is that you?

Why take a workshop?

Because the only true introductory level dance class is a workshop!

This is because everyone is at the same level – either completely new to dance or to that specific dance genre.

With weekly drop in classes, we never know who is ‘dropping in’ or how much they know (or don’t).

Keep in mind that a Beginner level class is one step UP from Introductory.  Skipping a level when you’re new to something is not the easiest nor the quickest path.  Our Intro to Dance Workshops are the fastest track for adults to learn and enjoy the art of dance.

Intro to Dance Workshops are specifically designed for those who did not study dance as a kid.

You missed out on some fundamental knowlege that we can’t teach you in a drop in class because – they move too fast.  Here we slow things down, teach you what you missed and send you into our weekly classes with confidence because you’ll have a solid foundation and a strong level of understanding of what you’re doing! In these workshops, attendance is limited to 10 people and everybody is new so we are able to focus on the basics – which is very helpful.

You can learn a lot just by taking classes, but in a workshop your learning is greatly accelerated – because everything is explained.

But really… Why SHOULD you take an Intro to Dance Workshop?:

Because it’s an amazing experience and you’re worth it. You deserve it. This is for you. For your growth, your wellness, your joy.  These are the same reasons you will take classes with us every week.  But in a workshop, it’s even more ‘you time’.

You get to be on the receiving end of a teacher that champions you directly.

You will expand your mind and strengthen your body in new ways. And because you’ve made this commitment (even if it’s only 4 classes), you get to schedule other things around it so they don’t stop you from doing this for yourself.

Check out our workshops below. Follow our lead.  Let us do this for you.

Learn CONTEMPORARY!

Intro to Contemporary Workshop with Jena!
Sunday March 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd / 11am-12pm

Welcome to the world of physical poetry. This is Contemporary dance! Popularized over a decade ago by the TV show So You Think You Can Dance, this style of movement is characterized by its expressiveness.

Contemporary dance is expressive, empowering, and a ton of fun to learn, especially in this supportive and nurturing workshop led by Jena Brooks. No prior dance experience needed! You’ll explore flowing movement, musicality, and connection to emotion in a way that’s approachable for total beginners.

Learn HIP HOP!

Intro to Hip Hop Workshop with JJ
Wednesday March 4th, 11th, 18th & 25th / 5:30-6:30pm

Hip-hop dance is an art form that can be quickly mastered – if you have the right teacher!  As new as it is (in the commercial dance scene), Hip Hop has now been around long enough to have structured training.  This is really good news! Back in the day, you learned to dance this way at a club. Not any longer!  Unlike other dance styles, Hip Hop is the most evolutionary of all commercial dance genres because it embraces the zeitgeist of fashion, attitude, musicality and athleticism -which is constantly updating. Add to that the influence of many different musical genres, cultures and popular artists. There’s a reason why hip-hop is so captivating to watch and fun to learn: it’s creative, rhythmic, stylish and very “now”.  In this 4 week workshop, you’ll be learning from one of our most popular and celebrated teachers: veteran professional dancer John James (known professionally as JJ).

Pilates 101!

Intro to Pilates Workshop with Melissa!
Friday March 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th / 7-8pm

Welcome to the Dance 101 Pilates Workshop!

Curious about Pilates?  It’s trending everywhere nowadays, but dancers have known about it and trained with it for decades.  If you’re curious about why Pilates is such a big deal,  this workshop will clearly lay it out for you.  What is it about Pilates that has caused it to spread like fire now? What do Pilates enthusiasts know that you don’t? How does Pilates tone and stretch you – how does it work, exactly?  Why do professional dancers and sport athletes rely on this training to achieve extraordinary physical abilities and to rehabilitate injuries?

This workshop will answer these and all your questions and more.  You will emerge from this experience with a strong foundational understanding of this physical science and how to use this training for your personal benefit. Get ready to learn about your anatomy!

Workshop includes 4, 60 minute classes, held once a week during the month of March.  Also included is a private 30 minute session on the Pilates Reformer*.

*The reformer session is scheduled separately and will cover the 5 basic strengths of the Reformer: the jump board, long/short box, barrel, foot/arm straps & balance board.

Learn BALLET!

Intro to Ballet Workshop with Jessica
Saturday March 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th / 9-10am

Ballet first appeared during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century -that’s over 700 years ago! Its terminology is in French and many of its exercises are done today the same as they were done centuries ago which is pretty amazing if you think about it. 700 years is a long time to get something right and when you study Ballet, all of its history and wisdom gets passed onto you. Ballet and the ballet barre specifically has only one objective and that is to make a dancer – of ANY kind. No matter what style of dance is your jam: Hip Hop, Contemporary, Jazz, Ballroom, Salsa or Ballet itself…the very best dancers train at the barre – because of what it teaches the body to do.  Leave your tutu and tights at home and let your hair down: this is Ballet for adults. Wear your yoga pants and a tank, ballet slippers are not expensive (Amazon) or work in your socks. This is such an amazing experience!

Dance 101 has been introducing Ballet to adults of all ages for 22 years.  We got it down.  We know how to teach you and if this is something you want for yourself all you have to do is reach out and take it.

Learn JAZZ!

Intro to Jazz Workshop with Grace Carter!
Saturday March 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th / 12:30-1:30pm

“Jazz is hard to define because it’s constantly changing and growing. But that means a jazz dancer can easily do all types of dance.” —Sean Cheesman

It’s true— being a dancer trained in jazz,  puts you in a category that defies all definitions. There’s street jazz, Latin jazz, pop jazz, contemporary, broadway jazz, hip-hop— and at the root of it all? Classic jazz technique!

Whether you’re a non technical dancer looking to increase your versatility and vocabulary, or an absolute beginner who needs guidance into the great wild world of dance, this workshop is a great place to start. Instructor Grace Carter will break down all of the must-know jazz steps, styles, and techniques with no judgement or pressure but high payoff! At the end of 4 weeks, you’ll be initiating movement from your core, creating strong, clean lines, and kick-ball-changing your way into your next jazz class with confidence.

Learn HOUSE DANCE!

*CURRENTLY IN SESSION – REGISTRATION IS CLOSED*

Intro to Dance Workshop with Bryan
Friday January 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th / 7:30-8:30pm

House dance has a storied history dating back to the 1980s Chicago and New York underground club scene. Still underground but sliding into mainstream hip hop today, House dance is characterized by bouncy fluid body movements (like jacking and lofting), blending influences from Breakdancing, African, and Latin dance. House dancers are amazing to watch. Their magnetism is off the charts -partly because of the sensuality of this sub-genre of hip hop. The fact that you can learn how to do this is priceless!

This four-week House Foundations workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of House dance through groove, footwork, musicality, and freestyle. The program culminates in a choreography combo during the final class that integrates core steps learned throughout the workshop.

No prior House experience required.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understand the cultural foundation of House dance
  • Perform essential House footwork with confidence
  • Develop rhythmic awareness and groove
  • Transition between steps fluidly
  • Apply foundational steps within choreography
  • Feel comfortable freestyling in a supportive environment
