Pilates BY dancers, FOR dancers

Taught by Melissa Muniz, Certified Master Pilates Instructor & dance 101 teacher

Private & Semi-private Reformer sessions (Duets) are coming to Dance 101!

Here’s why we are so excited to offer this to you:

  • Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned practitioner, our Reformer sessions are uniquely curated with a special focus on dance.  AND because each session is a Private or a Duet, they’re highly personalized and customized to you – within the Classic Pilates Reformer framework. When you walk into a session, you tell us if there is something specific you wish to strengthen.  Every dancer has a wish list. What’s on yours?

Here’s why we feel so strongly about it:

  • Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates—who worked directly with legendary dancers like George Balanchine and Martha Graham—the Pilates method, originally called “Contrology,” focuses on strengthening the deep stabilizing muscles of the core. This scientific approach to conditioning builds a resilient, balanced body that can withstand the demands of  the highest levels of dance – imagine what it can do for you.
  • Enhanced core stability:

Pilates’ focus on the deep core muscles (abdominals, pelvic floor, and back), provides the rock-solid foundation needed for higher extensions, stronger balances, and more powerful jumps.

  • Controlled flexibility:

Pilates promotes active flexibility, allowing dancers to lengthen muscles while maintaining strength and stability. This creates fluid, controlled movement that is both expressive and safe.

  • Mind-body connection:

Both Dance and Pilates demand mental presence and concentration. Combining them strengthens the dancer’s ability to sense and control their body with greater precision, reducing inefficient movement patterns and enhancing artistry.

  • Injury prevention:

By strengthening underdeveloped muscle groups and reinforcing proper alignment, Pilates serves as a vital safeguard against common dance injuries.

By integrating the tradition of classical dance training with the intelligent, science-based conditioning of Pilates, dancers can unlock their full potential.

This is what dance 101 is all about.
