LEVELING UP: A HIP HOP WORKSHOP

4 Week Workshop with Jared

You don’t have to be a professional to dance like one. What you do need is to gain a coveted inside look into how a professional polish is achieved. This workshop is going to give that to you. Imagine taking a microscope to the stylized movement of Hip Hop to uncover what exactly makes professional dancers move with such smooth control, power and confidence. Join one of dance 101’s most celebrated Hip Hop teachers, Jared “J-Roc, King of Hearts” James as he takes you “backstage” into the training room, teaching you the drills and coaching you on the skills to level up your dance game.

Perfect for dancers looking to polish their technique and command the dance floor or the stage with confidence.

Syllabus:

Class 1. Footwork & Groove Masterclass:
Learn the intricate steps and dynamic movements that define the genre. From classic b-boy techniques, House dancing to modern freestyle, Hip Hop choreography is often heavily influenced by Jazz – but the styling is different. In this class, you’ll practice the steps you might already know as you work on striking them with a stronger Hip Hop influence. Next there’s that groove – which is how you carry yourself; the bounce. Identifying the rhythm and hitting it with attitude and swagger.

Class 2. Lines and Precision:
In this segment, you’ll focus on refining your movements and mastering clean lines (fists / blades / open hands, etc). Learn how to execute sharp angles, smooth transitions, and precise gestures that will elevate your performance to new heights.

Class 3: Interpreting Hip Hop Choreography:
There are 4 fundamental strategies choreographers draw upon to create structured movement. What exactly are you dancing to? The story, the instruments, the beat, the verse/chorus or the sound of the words? Hip Hop typically draws from all of these strategies. Your knowledge of this immediately puts you at an advantage. If you understand how Hip Hop choreography is created, your execution of it will carry meaning. Additionally, if you understand what inspired it, it becomes easier to pick up and to remember what to do. In this class you will learn how to analyze (hear) the music and how to pair it to the choreography inspired by it. This understanding will elevate the degree in which you are dancing “inside” the song and not on “top” of it.

Class 4: Hip Hop Fusion Finale:
This culmination class brings all the elements you’ve learned into a grand finale choreographed routine.
