Learn to Tap
Intro to Tap - New dates TBA
New Year, New Adventure! Tap is a really fun dance style that can be quickly mastered when you start off with a fundamentals workshop like this. No tap shoes, no problem! We have them for rent ($4) until you become so addicted you purchase your own. Tap training engages the mind, is a great cardio workout (when you get down some basic steps), and a fantastic stress buster - not to mention a truly entertaining art form. Carve an hour out of your week to do this for yourself.
You'll be amazed at how quickly you learn under the expert tutelage of Brad Dorfman. Brad specializes in beginning tappers. He will teach you what you need to learn to launch you to the next level and beyond. This 6 week/6 class Intro to Tap Fundamentals Workshop only comes around about once a year. Don't miss out! Workshop is limited to 15 participants.
WHAT TO EXPECT EACH WEEK:
WEEK 1
A complete introduction to the world of tap dance… what is it? Where does it come from? What does a typical tap class consist of out in the world? We’ll cover the shoes themselves, some of the fundamental skills around shifting your weight and understanding rhythm as well as how to count music. Students will also learn the names of and how to perform the most foundational steps in tap such as “heel, toes, brushes, step, scuff, dig.” Don’t know what that is? You will after this week!
WEEK 2
We will begin to build on those foundational steps… after a full review, we will introduce steps which consist of 2 sounds such as “flap, shuffle, and ball change.” At the end of this class, you’re officially on your way to becoming a hoofer.
WEEK 3
After another complete review of our foundational steps, we’ll continue to build on the techniques through steps including “slurps” and “riffles.”
WEEK 4
Our final week of learning new steps will begin with another complete review, followed by “paradiddles, cramp rolls, and irishes.”
WEEK 5
How does a tap class begin? This week we’ll take a look at tap warm up routines, and even learn a common tap warm up used in other Dance 101 tap classes. By the end of this week, you’ll be able to walk into any beginner tap class at the studio with confidence.
WEEK 6
Graduation week! This class is structured like a normal tap class. We’ll warm up, learn a new piece of technique, and then apply it through some fun, easy to pick up beginner tap choreography.
