Intro to Ballet Basics Workshop with Lara

Ballet first appeared during the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century -that’s over 700 years ago! Its terminology is in French and many of its exercises are done today the same as they were done centuries ago. 700 years is a long time to perfect a method and when you study Ballet, all of its history and wisdom gets passed onto you. Ballet makes dancers. No matter what kind of dancer you wish to be: Hip Hop, Contemporary, Jazz, Ballroom, Salsa…the very best dancers train in Ballet. This one-of-a-kind 4 week workshop will give you the Why, What and How of Ballet and launch you on the fastest track in dance training: BALLET!

Workshop Syllabus:

  • Week 1
    • Instructor and dancer intros
    • Ballet mindset and studio expectations
    • What even is ballet and why do we do it today? (Brief history)
    • Finding your ballet alignment
    • Interacting with the barre
    • Introduce parallel and 1st position of the feet
    • Introduce plié and build on that to learn relevé, elevé
    • Introduce sauté (if time)
  • Week 2
    • Review ballet alignment and discuss injury prevention
    • Practice proper turnout
    • Learn positions of the arms and feet
    • Review plié, relevé, elevé, and sauté
  • Week 3
    • Find ballet alignment and learn typical warm up combination
    • Review proper turnout
    • Review positions of arms and feet
    • Plié, relevé, elevé, and sauté exercises
    • Introduce the concept of articulating the feet
    • Foot strengthening exercises
    • Introduce tendu and dégagé
  • Week 4
    • Discuss the typical flow of a ballet class
    • Warm up exercises
    • Review positions of arms and feet
    • Plié, relevé, elevé, and sauté exercises
    • Foot strengthening exercises
    • Review tendu and dégagé
    • Arm strengthening exercises for port de bras
    • Introduce rond de jambe (if time)
    • End with Reverance sequence
